Modernizing the Finance Tech Stack

Finance teams modernize one application at a time and still run the joins between those applications in exports, reconciliations and email approvals. The general ledger, purchasing, planning, cash, reporting and controls remain separate layers. That collection is the finance tech stack, and it only modernizes when those layers share data, dimensions, approval rules and a usable audit record.

A new ERP that cannot feed planning, or a spend tool that never reaches the ledger, leaves finance compensating in the same places as before. Cloud hosting and add-on AI features do not change that if the process between systems is still manual.

As the CFO, modernizing the stack means choosing software for each layer with the rest of the stack in view. The test is whether a request can be controlled before it is committed, posted once, planned against, paid under defined authority, and reported without rebuilding the numbers by hand.

ERP & Financial Management

The expectations placed on finance are changing faster than the systems many teams rely on. Deloitte’s Finance Trends 2026 research, based on more than 1,300 finance leaders, points to greater emphasis on scenario planning, more agile governance and stronger finance ownership of cost management as organizations respond to a more complex operating environment.1

As the CFO, this should raise a more fundamental question about the financial core. Faster planning and tighter cost control depend on having dependable financial data, consistent processes and sufficient visibility across the organization. If the ERP cannot provide that foundation, finance is forced to compensate through additional reporting layers, reconciliations and manual processes.

The South African ERP market is also continuing its move towards cloud delivery, with cloud accounting for 62.18% of local ERP software revenue in 2025.2  If you are considering modernization, however, the deployment model is only part of the decision. The more important test is whether the ERP can manage multi entity complexity, support financial controls, connect cleanly with the wider technology stack and provide reliable information as transaction volumes and reporting requirements increase.

Spend Management & Controls

For CFOs, spend management is increasingly about gaining control earlier in the purchasing cycle. Once an invoice reaches accounts payable, the organization has usually already committed the money. The greater opportunity is to give finance visibility over requests, budgets and approvals before that commitment is made, while reducing the administrative effort required to process the transaction afterwards.

This becomes more relevant as South Africa moves towards a more structured digital tax administration. SARS has set out a longer term  strategy geared towards structured electronic invoicing and more timely transaction reporting, increasing the importance of accurate data and consistent processes across procurement and accounts payable.3 At the same time, international mid market research shows that automation remains uneven, with 44% of surveyed mid sized businesses having automated only one or two accounts payable processes.4 From a financial leadership perspective, modernization should connect procurement, invoice processing and financial control rather than automate individual tasks in isolation.. The system needs to enforce budget limits, automate approvals, match invoices to orders, manage exceptions, and log a complete audit history.

FP&A Performance Management

In 2026, the CFO’s planning challenge is no longer simply producing an annual budget and measuring performance against it. The South African Reserve Bank continues to describe an environment shaped by global uncertainty, changing inflation pressures and financial market volatility, including renewed volatility in the rand during 2026.5 When assumptions around costs, currencies, demand or funding conditions can change quickly, finance needs to understand the impact before those changes work their way through reported results.

This is reflected in Deloitte’s Finance Trends 2026 research of 1,326 finance leaders. 30% identified stronger advanced scenario planning as a response to uncertainty, while 28% identified more agile governance for faster decision making.1

The shift is important for FP&A because the value of planning increasingly lies in how quickly finance can revise assumptions, compare possible outcomes and give leadership a clear view of the financial consequences.  Modernizing the FP&A layer of the technology stack means moving beyond static budgets and disconnected forecasting models. Planning systems should link real-time performance data, model key drivers across multiple scenarios, and make variances visible and actionable for management.

Treasury Cash & Payments

Treasury becomes more complex as cash is spread across entities, bank accounts and currencies, while funding requirements and foreign exchange exposure can change quickly. Finance leaders need to understand not only how much cash the organization has, but where it sits, what obligations are approaching and how currency movements could affect the business's position.

Payment activity creates a different control challenge, which is further exacerbated by volatile foreign exchange markets.5 SABRIC  reported that digital banking fraud cases increased from 31,612 in 2023 to 64,000 in 2024, while losses increased from R1 billion to more than R1.4 billion.6  The treasury environment therefore requires stronger visibility over liquidity and exposure by finance leaders, alongside tighter control over how payments move through the organization. Modernizing this part of the finance technology stack means bringing treasury, cash management and payments into a more connected process. Finance needs global cash visibility, reliable liquidity and foreign currency forecasting, and controlled, fully audited payment workflows, with defined authority and clear audit records.

Analytics & Finance Data

As the CFO, the challenge is no longer access to data. Finance now draws information from ERP, payroll, CRM, procurement and operational systems, but the value of that information depends on whether it can be brought together consistently and trusted when decisions need to be made.

PwC’s 2025 Africa Cloud Business Survey found that only 33% of surveyed African organizations had modernized their data architecture to support cloud analytics.7 The reporting problem extends beyond infrastructure. In global finance research,  54% of surveyed organizations reported difficulties producing trustworthy reports for stakeholders.8 This creates a gap between having more data available and being able to use it confidently across reporting, planning and performance analysis for finance leaders

Modernizing the analytics and finance data layer therefore means creating a governed foundation between source systems and the information used by management.

Finance needs consistent definitions, reliable operational data, controlled access, and self-service analytics that allow teams to investigate performance, with a single version of the truth.

Agentic Workflow Automation

Finance automation is moving beyond individual rules and repetitive tasks towards systems that can interpret information, coordinate activity across applications and initiate parts of a workflow themselves. A 2026 South African study of accounting professionals found that  37% reported using robotic process automation, while 30% planned adoption within one year.9 The foundation for greater automation is therefore already present in many finance environments.

The next shift is happening inside the applications finance teams already use. Gartner forecasts that 40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025.10 As these capabilities move into ERP, procurement, payments and other finance systems, CFOs will need to decide which activities can be handled autonomously and where human review should remain part of the process. Governance has not developed at the same pace. A Deloitte survey of 3,235 leaders across 24 countries. Only 21% reported having a mature governance model for agentic AI.11 Modernizing this part of the finance technology stack therefore requires more than deploying AI tools. Finance needs connected workflows, defined approval authority, clear exception handling, and a reliable record of what automated systems have done across the financial process.

Risk, Tax & Compliance

By modernizing finance systems, CFOs also change  the control environment around them. More connected processes can improve efficiency, but they also increase the importance of knowing who can access financial information, how transactions are approved and whether the organization can produce reliable evidence when decisions or submissions are challenged.

Governance and regulatory expectations are moving in that direction. King V reduces the governance principles from 17 under King IV to 13, with the new framework applying from 2026.12 Tax administration is becoming more data-driven as well. Mandatory e invoicing forms part of SARS VAT modernization, with system design and pilots continuing through 2026.3 Enforcement already carries significant financial consequences, with 3,757 specialized audits generating R46 billion in additional assessments across 2024 and 2025.13

Risk is also becoming a more prominent executive concern. PwC’s 2026 South African research found that 63% of South African business and technology leaders ranked cyber risk investment among their top three strategic priorities.14 Finance systems therefore need controls that remain effective as more processes become digital, with clear approval authority, controlled access and traceable records. Tax reporting also needs to draw from accurate financial data so that increasing automation in regulatory reporting does not create another layer of manual reconciliation around the finance function.

Modernizing the finance tech stack is the work of connecting those layers, not collecting newer applications. The comparisons are organized by layer because that is how software is bought. The stack still has to operate as one process from request through to reporting and evidence.

Finance should keep two tests in view: whether the platform can do the job of its layer, and whether it can pass controlled, reliable information to the layers around it. A platform that fails the second test recreates the spreadsheet joins the modernisation was meant to remove.
